Nearly two months into the transfer window, and all there is to show are a bunch of half-baked rumors plus a lot of interview clips with Jean-Michel Aulas straight up lying to everyone’s faces.
As discussed ad nauseum, Lyon need at least one, if not two central defenders. Marcelo will likely leave, and that will leave Jeremy Morel as the senior CB. His partners will be two kids just promoted from the B team.
Before we jump into the latest rumors, here’s a recap of what has happened so far:
Transfers In (€19.55m)
- Purchase of loaned players Tanguy Ndombele (€8m) and Oumar Solet (€0.55m)
- Debut of January purchases Léo Dubois (free) and Martin Terrier (€11m)
Transfers Out (€56.6m)
- Willem Geubbels (€20m)
- Romain Del Castillo (€2m)
- Aldo Kalulu (€2.1m)
- Jean-Phillipe Mateta (€8m)
- Mouctar Diakhaby (€15m)
- Sergi Darder (€8m)
- Nicolas Nkoulou (€3.5m)
Looking at the above list, I’m amazed that Aulas managed to sell over €50m worth of bench players. Life goals, right there.
In the midst of this garage sale, he did manage to get contact extensions signed for Houssem Aoaur (2023) and Yassin Fekir (2020).
I’m going to be honest with you, I’m over this already. Unlike the Michael Essien transfer saga, which was watching a soap opera unfold, the Fekir drama would find a place on PBS, it’s that boring. We all thought it was over, but then this interview of Jurgen Klopp surfaced, and the usually straightforward manager was unusually reticent about Fekir. Read into it what you will.
West Ham have already submitted a bid of €17m for Marcelo, which was rejected. Then a week later, they submitted another one, this time for €25m. And Aulas still said no! Marcelo has one year left on his contract and can hardly be accused of being Champions League quality. I am baffled at the logic here.
Real Betis are interested in Maolida, who has been impressing in France’s U19 squad. A week ago, I would said the answer was no, but given at who OL are looking to bring in, this is now a real possibility.
Roma would like to replace ex-Lyon player Maxime Gonalons with Ndombele. Aulas’s response is below. To translate (though honestly, the emoticon gives it away), Aulas is questioning Roma’s ability to do so. So let’s call this transfer likelihood a solid no.
Lyon reportedly made a €30m offer for Mina. Everton, who previously had bid €24m but were rejected, increased their bid to slightly edge out OL. Before Lyon could think of a counteroffer, Manchester United entered the fray, with a supposed bid of €38m.
Not sure how I feel about this one. He’s a CB, which is a plus, but he’s error-prone. He’s made some spectacular gaffes. But he’s an international and was part of Belgium’s WC squad.
A hotshot striker who plays for Fluminense, Lyon have been pleased with what they’ve seen so far. The club wants €12m, which is pocket change for OL. He’s considered a realistic alternative if one of the club’s current strikers depart.
Another attacking prospect, Aulas has been in touch with Porto, who are asking for lot of money. No word if OL are actively trying to negotiate, but Aulas has mentioned him enough times that it’s either true or a lie.
For me, the weirdest rumor of the bunch. Griffiths is a young prospect from Tottenham who is their less awesome equivalent of Amine Gouriri. Griffiths was left out of Arsenal’s pre-season tour and is upset at not getting a chance to play. The internets have been abuzz with the fact that he could sign with OL at any moment. It’s been 96 hours, so does that mean the moment is over?
Aulas would like us to know that Lyon did not try to hijack OM’s latest transfer. If true, I’m a little sad. Nothing brightens my day more than crying OM fans.
Hatem Ben Arfa
NO. Anytime I see his name linked with OL, my blood boils.
Not coming to Lyon. He has chosen to play for Lazio. Players prefer 5th placed teams in other leagues. Le sigh.
Another potential replacement for Maolida, OL are watching him “from afar.” AKA someone at the main office is watching youtube clips.
Since no one wants to come to OL, the club is now looking in Ligue 2. It’s a little embarrassing. That’s not to say that L2 doesn’t have good players, but does that mean that L1 is out of reach?
Another defender, he’s been one of Benfica’s most consistent players. Lyon have submitted a €30m bid, which was soundly rejected by the Portuguese. Dias has a release clause of €45m, and Benfica don’t want to budge unless its met.
I got super excited about this rumor. Lopez is a few years older than the players that Lyon have been linked with. Experience will help offset Marcelo’s departure. The Spanish press reported that the player was interested and that Lyon had even put in an offer. However, tomorrow’s L’Equipe is reporting that this is not true. This same article also reports that Lyon are interested in Mamadou Sakho but find his wages prohibitive.
In a rare turn of events, a club has offered us a player. Beşiktaş heard about Lyon’s defensive troubles, and either because they are feeling guilty over all that UEFA trouble or because they want to reduce their wage bill, they proposed Croatian defensive stalwart Vida. Lyon didn’t open the email though.
A Swedish defender who played in every World Cup game his country took part of, he’s been criminally underused at Manchester United. Despite that, Mourinho doesn’t want to let him leave. Expect Lyon to push back at this because Aulas’s goal in life is to offer a home to wayward Manchester United rejects.
I’m pretty sure Aulas spread this rumor himself just to annoy PSG owner Nasser al-Khelaïfi. Our president is a lovable shit like that.
